Gay Kelleway

Gay Kelleway started training in 1991.

“One of the most exciting and talented trainers of modern times”.

Gay rode her first winner on the flat for leading trainer Clive Brittain and at the tender age of 17 years old finished second in the ladies Amateur Championship, she then won it at 18, check to see if anyone else has won it that young!  After that she turned professional and became Champion Professional Lady Rider three years in a row. Gay was the first woman to ride in a Gold Cup at Ascot on Pretty Picture and the first woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot when her horse Sprowston Boy won. In total, Gay rode some 60 winners, no mean feat in a country where racing is 95% male orientated.
Her passion for racing took her to New Zealand for the winter winning big races at both the Auckland tracks Ellerslie and Avondale as there were more opportunities for women jockeys, but a constant struggle with her weight made her ill so she decided to give up race riding and return to Britain. After retiring from race riding she spent a year working in Media which stood her in good stead to start training. She moved back to Newmarket in 1991 and brought a horse called Aberfoyle for 3000 guineas. After four wins, she was hooked! Gay started out by renting a few boxes from Bob Champion but then moved to the state of the art, Whitcombe Manor where she felt it would be the difference between a local B & B and The Hilton.
Gay is now back in Newmarket after a period training both in Dubai and in Lingfield. Her yard is extremely well organised. Gay has to work long hours but still tries to find time for her many friends and is always a very popular party guest. She continues to ride out, makes entries and oversees much of the feeding and training regimes. She is then often off to the races to meet up with her owners and enjoy another day at the races.
Gay’s owners know that their horses are always given individual care and attention and that if the horse has ability she will do her very best to get them to show their true potential. Owners will have full choice of jockeys and we always use the best jockeys available on the day. Very often owners will bring horses to Gay where they may not have sparkled with other trainers, and nothing gives her more satisfaction than seeing the horse win, and the faces of the owners when their pride and joy is led into the Winners Enclosure!

The Team

We have a fantastic, friendly team here at QA Stables, who are passionate about all the horses.  All the staff take time to give each and every horse individual care and attention.

Queen Alexandra Stables

The facilities at Queen Alexandra Stables are of the highest quality. We have access to the famous gallops at Newmarket, widely regarded as among the best training gallops in the country.
The Equine swimming pool is an excellent facility to train and rehabilitate racehorses. It is low impact exercise so is ideal for training horses with a reduced risk of injury. It is also useful for horses that are recovering from injury.

The yard at Queen Alexandra Stables are both welcoming and well equipped. All owners are welcome to come and see their horses at the yard and being taken out onto the gallops.
Horses with us have access to expansive open fields allowing them to enjoy a natural environment.
Safe transport to meetings is an important consideration for us.  Our modern horseboxes ensure our horses arrive safely and in style.

At Queen Alexandra Stables, I invite all my owners to take a close and personal interest in their horses and my yard. Racing is my life, it can be yours too. I enjoy regular contact with owners, and nothing is ever too much trouble. I really do encourage all my owners to feel involved with the ownership and training of their horses, and my stables are always open. The sport is not just about winning races, I also like to entertain with a variety of social events.

Situated in the lovely village of Exning, Newmarket, all my horses have stables in a pleasant, calm environment, where they are treated as pets, not commodities. Our facilities are second to none, with the famous Newmarket Gallop easily accessible. You are always welcome to visit the yard or to watch the morning exercise on the gallops, and I’m always available on the mobile to discuss your ownership.
We send our horses to the idyllic Parsonage Farm for their holidays and turn-out.

Horses for Sale

Gay Kelleway Racing always has a number of horses available for sale or lease, including a wide variety of 2-y-o’s +.

We offer sole ownership, leasing, partnerships, syndicates and shares as little as 5% – with big rewards, from listed placed horses to potentially Royal Ascot 3-y-o’s.

Gay can use her many connections within the industry to acquire the exact type of horse to meet your needs and still give you value for money whatever your budget.

Great win for Yankee Mail
15 Jun 2016

Really thrilled to have broken the string of second places with a great win for Yankee Mail last night at Brighton. First time out for the yard and nice for owner Ralph Mortlock to get a win. Stosur and Showtime Star ran well placing 3rd and 4th. Looking forward to a fabulous day’s racing at Royal Ascot today with Yeah Baby Yeah

14 Jun 2016

Please support me! I am riding at Newbury on 30 June in a Charity Race to support the PeliCan CanCer Foundation and PanCreatiC CanCer uK. The race is being run in memory of Christian Marner and the popular Lambourn trainer John Hills who were two very special men, passionate about racing and having ‘Fun’. Sadly, they died from Cancer far too early in life and are hugely missed. My father also died too young form this dreaded disease so this is a cause close to my heart. Pelican Cancer Foundation and Pancreatic Cancer UK are wonderful charities that successfully fight and treat cancers below the belt. They support and specialise in medical research, education, detection and pioneering precision surgery. Please go to my justgiving page and donate – every little bit counts and all much appreciated

Seconds Again!
09 Jun 2016

Another week of close second places! September Issue was due for a win and ran a great race to be narrowly beaten at Windsor on Monday and last night Yeah Baby Yeah was pipped at the post at Yarmouth. Really pleased with both horses who tried their best.
